A young fighter model for climate adaptation in the area of the great African lakes

A girl who fights for the climate in Rwanda was my target with its model of adaptation to climate change in the African Great Lakes. His name is DUSHIME Valentine, coordinator of an organization called Rwanda Power Shift and promoter of Rwnda green Initiative project. She is fighting against global warming.
An awareness and action campaign aiming at turning our daily plans into practical actions by finding solutions to climate crisis.
Its overall goal was to laud up for youth and local communities to participate in decision making on the concerns of climate change and environment as a whole.

Objectives of that campain was:

– To increase the understanding of the impact of climate change and what actions communities can take to build resilience. We intend to do this through the formal training of community to develop skills on climate change.

– To mobilize public support for environmental protection and compliance with laws to prevent violations of human and environmental rights through local leadership and national campaigns.
After the completion of the project, the following was the results that we anticipated:
More youth entrepreneurs, who turn green activities into business, are created in Rwanda, More people in Rwanda know about climate change and simple actions to take to adapt and mitigate the negative impacts; More citizens join the Rwanda Green Initiative.

Following was Steps to Implement
– Select 20 youth who will participate in the project as volunteers and who will be trained as climate leaders. They will be expected to serve as a ripple effect to their peers and communities, and be agents of change.

– Organize a workshop on environment conservation bringing together the 40 volunteers. We expect collaborating with the Ministry of Youth, and Ministry of Natural Resources and other organizations such as Global Water Partnership (GWP) Rwanda to organize this workshop.

– Organize a local Quizes, songs and essay competition at five secondary schools situated in Nyabihu district, western province with the theme “Best solutions to matters of climate change in Rwanda”. Three (3) best essays, songs and students responds to quizzes will be awarded a certificate, a trophy and other interesting recognitions. The winning essays will also be featured on the local media.

The event was organised by a new founded youth Non-Profit organization on environment and sustainable development namely, “Rwanda Green Initiative” (RGI). RGI mission is to enhance environment protection, conservation and promotion of sustainable development through climate change resilience to create a prosperous future benefiting all Rwandans.
RPS globally its name is Global Power Shift (GPS) initiated by 350.org organization, focusing on three Key strategies: cause, consequence and solution to climate change. Locally is implemented by RGI and focus on consequence and solution to climate change. RPS project goal is to laud up for youth and local communities to participate in decision making on the concerns of climate change and environment as a whole.
